After long saga, 23andMe’s deal with Anne Wojcicki’s nonprofit finally closes

At long last, Anne Wojcicki has officially bought 23andMe.

The co-founder and former CEO’s nonprofit, TTAM Research Institute, on Monday said it had completed the acquisition of 23andMe’s consumer genetics business and its research unit.

In June, Wojcicki’s TTAM won a bid to acquire 23andMe for $305 million as part of bankruptcy proceedings. Regeneron had previously offered $256 million to buy the struggling consumer genetics company.

The completion of the deal is a big win for Wojcicki, who while serving as CEO tried to buy back her company for more than a year — a tumultuous campaign that last year led to all of 23andMe’s independent board directors resigning, and in March sent the company to bankruptcy. At that point, Wojcicki stepped down to continue bidding on the company’s assets.

TTAM said on Monday that it plans to continue operating the consumer genetics testing and research parts of 23andMe, adding that it is “committed to providing customers with choice and transparency with their data, including the option to change their decision on whether to participate in research.”
